Chapter 9

He was gone. Brantlee looked at her phone for the hundredth time. No message. No phone calls. Nothing. Lex had just disappeared from her life.

Her heart ached, but she tried to convince herself that this was good. That this was for the best. If he’d stayed any longer, she and Anthony would have gotten used to him being around. She would have asked him to start spending the night with her. She would have anticipated him for meals and weekends. He would have become a part of their lives and then he would have gotten bored with her and Anthony and moved on. It would have hurt a whole lot more after that.

So yes, it was better that he’d gone on with his life sooner rather then letting her come to love him. To care for him. To think of him as…her own. It was much better this way. A clean break.

Still, her heart ached. She felt like there was a giant hole in her chest. Every time something happened, she wanted to call him and let him know. She wanted to hear his voice, hear his laughter. She wanted to tell him something to make him laugh because she knew that he didn’t laugh enough. His life was tough and he worked hard. He needed to stop and relax more often. He needed to laugh.

And the man needed children. The way he’d talked to Anthony, even when her son was just being silly, seemed to lighten his mood. Every interaction between them was good and wonderful. She remembered standing at the stove making popcorn for movie night, just listening to Lex’s deep voice explain something to Anthony, or they would be goofy together, laughing about something, playing Chutes and Ladders or Candyland or a silly card game.

Was someone taking the time to talk with Lex? Did he have someone that made him laugh?

Goodness, she missed him!

But he had his own life. One that didn’t include the day to day monotony of grocery shopping and preschool drop offs. His life was exciting and adventurous. He investigated criminals and protected the world! He was a real-life superhero!

Lex would never be happy dealing with a small town life.
